Description

Independent Living Support (ILS) is a community-based program for Autistic adults in Nova Scotia, providing one-on-one support from a Community Living Coach to help participants live more independently.

The program uses a person-directed, strength-based approach where participants complete a PATH (a visual recording of goals, strengths, and support people).

Support Areas Include:

  • Daily Personal Health Activities: Personal hygiene, healthy living, sleep, and medication management.

  • Daily Living Activities: Meal preparation, setting alarms, grocery shopping, laundry, and housework.

  • Safety Skills: Fire alarm response, household chemical safety, and knowing when to contact emergency services.

  • Community Living Activities: Expanding social circles, building healthy relationships, employment, and transportation navigation.

  • Financial Management Skills: Paying bills, saving, budgeting, and banking.

Participants and their Community Living Coach work collaboratively using evidence-informed practices. The program is currently available in the Halifax Regional Municipality, with plans to expand.
